Damon Evans

Damon Evans

UGA football letterman Damon Evans was selected as Director of Athletics in December, 2003, and assumed the duties of succeeding long time athletic director Vince Dooley on July 1, 2004. Evans had served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Affairs from 2000-2004 after returning to his alma mater in 1998 as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Affairs.

Having assumed his current duties at the age of 34, he is one of the youngest directors of athletics in the country. However, he has already established himself as one of the up and coming athletic administrators in the country. He has received several honors including the Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal "40 Under 40 Award," the UGA Terry College of Business Award as the "Outstanding Young Alumnus for 2004," and was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the "101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports."

During his tenure as Sr. Associate Athletic Director for Internal Affairs, his responsibilities included serving as the chief financial officer for the Athletic Association as well as overseeing the areas of development, facilities, human resources, and sports medicine. He was also responsible for the administration of several sports including men's and women's basketball and gymnastics. In his role as Dooley's top assistant, Evans helped oversee an athletics program which fielded 21 intercollegiate sports teams involving more than 500 student-athletes, a $45 million budget and 206-member staff. He inherits a program that now has as budget of approximately $50 million.

He was also the architect of a financial strategy for tax-exempt financing of UGA athletic facilities construction, enabling $81 million in facilities expansions under his direction, including some $12 million in facilities for women's programs. He increased the Athletic Association reserve fund from $1 million to $9.5 million over a five-year period. He is also currently overseeing a $60 million capital campaign, the largest in Athletic Association history. His efforts earned him the 2004 UGA Terry College of Business Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

From 1998-2001, Evans served as a member of the NCAA Division I-A management council, the highest governance committee attainable by an athletic administrator. He is chair of the UGA academic task force charged with reviewing academic credentials of prospective student-athletes.

Evans returned to his alma mater in 1998 after serving as a Director (1995-97) at the Southeastern Conference, then being promoted to Asst. Commissioner for Eligibility and Compliance Services (1997-98). Prior to joining the SEC staff, the Gainesville, Ga., native held the position of Director of Compliance and Operations at the University of Missouri (1994-95). He also served an internship at the SEC office in 1993-94.

During his football career at Georgia (1988-92), Evans played in three bowl games (1989 Peach, 1991 Independence, and 1992 Citrus) and was a member of the 1991 and '92 teams that won nine and ten games, respectively. He was one of only two players on the 1992 team that had at least one starting assignment four consecutive seasons.

Evans played in eight games as a redshirt freshman at UGA and was named the "Most Improved Receiver" and "Biggest Offensive Surprise" following his first spring practice. He earned two degrees from the University of Georgia, receiving a bachelor's degree in finance in 1992 and a master's of education in sports management in 1994.

As a senior at Gainesville (Ga.) High School, he was named first team All-State wide receiver after recording a school-record 44 receptions and MVP on the Gainesville basketball team and set a school record in the 220-yard dash with the track team.

He is married to the former Kerri Budd of Atlanta and they have one son, Cameron, born November 18, 1998, and a daughter, Kennedy; born July 5, 2001.
